The lights are low, the house is quiet, and your newborn is suddenly wide awake. Sound familiar? In those first few months, bedtime can feel less like a routine and more like a guessing game.
You don’t need a perfect schedule to begin creating a peaceful evening rhythm. A few familiar steps can make bedtime feel more manageable while leaving room for feeds, diaper changes, and extra cuddles.
What Does Bedtime Look Like for a Newborn?
Newborns sleep in short stretches throughout the day and night. Their sleep cycles are still developing, and frequent waking is normal. A bedtime routine won’t remove the need for nighttime feeding or guarantee longer sleep.
Think of it as a familiar sequence you can repeat when your baby is ready to settle. The timing may change from one evening to the next, and that’s okay.
1. Turn Down the Activity
Start by dimming the lights and turning off loud entertainment. Speak softly and keep interactions calm.
During daytime awake periods, enjoy natural daylight, conversation, and gentle play. At night, keep feeds and diaper changes quiet and low-key. There’s no need to keep a tired newborn awake to try to improve nighttime sleep.
For families who choose background sound, our White Noise Sound Machine offers 30 sound options, 36 adjustable volume levels, timer settings, and a memory function.
Select a quiet, steady sound as an optional part of winding down. Keep the volume as low as possible, place the machine as far from baby’s head as possible and outside the crib with cords out of reach, and limit use with a timer or switch it off once baby is asleep. White noise does not replace safe sleep practices or guarantee longer sleep.
2. Check the Everyday Essentials
A diaper change and fresh sleepwear can be simple steps in your evening routine. Choose clothing that fits properly and suits the room temperature.
For a zip-up option, explore our Wavy Checkerboard Long-Sleeve Baby Sleeper Romper. Its full-length front zipper makes dressing and diaper changes more convenient. Check the size guide and select a proper fit for your baby.
For a seasonal choice, our Be My Boo Halloween Bamboo Zippy Pajamas feature a bamboo-viscose and spandex blend with foldover cuffs and feet. These run large, so consult the size chart and current size availability before ordering.
Avoid overheating, and leave hats off indoors at home. Sweating or a hot chest can indicate that your baby is too warm.
A bath can be an occasional part of winding down if your baby enjoys it, but you don’t need to add one to every bedtime. Keeping the routine short makes it easier to repeat.
On bath evenings, our 2-Piece Bath Kneeler and Elbow Rest Pad Set provides cushioning for a caregiver’s knees and elbows, with pockets for bath supplies. Keep your baby within reach and never leave them alone in the bath. The set provides caregiver comfort and does not support or protect baby in the water.
3. Follow Your Baby’s Feeding Needs
Offer a feed when your baby shows hunger cues, even if it changes the order of your routine. Newborns need frequent feeding, including overnight.
Follow your pediatrician’s instructions about feeding frequency and whether to wake your baby for feeds. Don’t delay feeding to reach a preferred bedtime or stretch the night.
If your baby falls asleep during a feed, you haven’t “ruined” the routine. You can return to the other steps another evening.
4. Add One Quiet Moment Together
Choose something simple: a short book, a lullaby, or a few minutes of gentle rocking while you’re awake.
You don’t have to finish the story or sing the whole song. The routine is there to support your family, so shorten it whenever your baby needs feeding, comfort, or sleep.
Repeating a few familiar steps can also help caregivers feel more settled during an unpredictable season.
5. Finish in a Safe Sleep Space
For every nap and nighttime sleep, place your baby on their back in a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or play yard with a firm, flat, level mattress and fitted sheet.
Keep pillows, loose blankets, stuffed animals, bumpers, loungers, and sleep positioners out. Share your room, with baby in their own separate sleep space, for at least the first six months.
If baby falls asleep in a swing, carrier, or car seat outside travel, move them to an appropriate sleep surface as soon as possible.
If you use a swaddle, always place baby on their back and stop swaddling at the first signs of trying to roll. Avoid weighted swaddles and weighted sleepwear. An appropriately sized, nonweighted sleep sack that leaves the arms free can be an alternative to loose bedding.
Our Cocoa Ribbed Stretch Swaddle is a 40-by-35-inch knit blanket with machine-washable care instructions. If you choose to swaddle, follow safe swaddling guidance and the product instructions. Keep the wrap secure without restricting the hips or breathing, and stop at the first signs of trying to roll.
Never leave the blanket loose in the crib or drape it over a sleeping baby. No swaddle prevents SIDS or guarantees longer sleep.
A Simple Evening Routine to Try
Use this flexible order as a starting point:
-
Lower the lights and reduce noise.
-
Check the diaper and change into suitable sleepwear.
-
Feed according to hunger cues and your pediatrician’s guidance.
-
Share a short song, story, or cuddle.
-
Place baby on their back in their own clear sleep space.
Feed sooner whenever needed. Skip steps when your baby is already ready to sleep.
Care for Yourself, Too
Nighttime care can be exhausting. Ask a partner or trusted support person to help when possible, and make sure every caregiver follows the same safe sleep practices.
Avoid couches and armchairs when feeding if you might fall asleep. Return your baby to their own sleep space before you go to sleep. If you accidentally fall asleep during a feed, move baby back as soon as you wake.
